IN BRIEF An institution for all the right reasons

Textarea
An integral part of the Ponsonby Road culinary landscape, there’s good reason this eatery continues to thrive. The staff know how to hustle, never forget a regular and can turn a table at lightning speed. They don’t miss a trick; your empty glass will be filled in an instant. Foodwise, they do the Italian classics well. Silken duck-liver parfait is served with fig jam, lightly roasted grapes and lavash. The roast-duck risotto with mushrooms has become legendary and the seafood soup with a broth made from tomato, dill and Pernod would be at home on the tables of all the great Italian movies. The flatbread toppings, too, are to be applauded: ours was caramelised onions, stracciatella, a deep dark leek oil and truffle butter. With familiar, generous food at every turn, a good glass of vino to accompany and an atmosphere that’s lively and fun, you can’t go wrong. Check website for opening hours MAINS: $24-$48
