Michael Meredith is at the height of his cooking powers when he is allowed to express his heritage – and this would be the most original restaurant in Aotearoa at present. What a way to show off the influence that Pasifika has made to Auckland. Flavours from his childhood and those borrowed from other cuisines combine with classic cooking techniques to produce inventive dishes such as puffed taro with crab, macadamia purée, mango and avocado which was a taste sensation. A pāua dish featuring paneer and burnt orange was cooked to perfection and the coconut bun with spiced rum caramel and banana sorbet felt like a trip to the islands on the tip of a spoon. Well-presented staff with natural friendliness added to the atmosphere and an extensive drinks list included cocktails to reflect the Pacific theme. Friends visiting from overseas?
