We adore Nelson on a blue-sky day, but a recent dive into the winter menu at this award-winning restaurant had us sighing with contentment at every bite. To start, the pāua schnitzel with potato, cabbage and a sensational kombu butter, and a twice-baked goat’s cheese soufflé. Next, a pillowy ricotta gnocchi with charred leeks, mushrooms, parmesan and a rich confit egg yolk, and the barbecued lamb with a magical savoury baklava, carrots, dates and tzatziki. Finally a caramelised yoghurt cake with poached pear to finish. Clearly co-owners Kevin Hopgood and Aaron Ballantyne are kicking goals at Hopgood’s & Co. Lucky Nelson.
