Highwater
IN BRIEF Modern city dining that is deservedly popular
This warm, relaxed eatery and bar in a modern, polished, industrial space is deservedly popular. Chef and co-owner Alric Hansen’s intelligent, creative and skillfully executed offering includes contemporary renditions of comforting classics. Nearly everything is made in house and the food is designed to share, with a chef’s menu (available with wine matches) to make the choice easy. Fish and meat are the focus, although the full gamut of dietary requirements is catered for. Our burrata with persimmon, quince vinegar and mandarin honey was well-balanced in both flavour and texture, the slow-cooked lamb was tender, moist and aromatic, and don’t be put off by the name cold apple crumble – it was excellent enough to crave a second portion. The drinks list offers house cocktails, on-tap beers and a thoughtfully curated, although somewhat expensive, choice of wines. Service is as smooth and accomplished as the food.
