Koji

Textarea
Koji brings a modern take on pan-Asian dining to Wellington’s city centre, where flavours take centre stage in a vibrant, contemporary setting. Led by chef Jonon MacDonald and co-owner Kat Strand, it has quickly built a loyal following for food that is clever, confident and full of personality. Each dish balances sophistication with a playful edge, all grounded in great New Zealand produce and a clear respect for flavour. The kitchen takes classic Asian ideas and builds on them in house wherever possible, using techniques like smoking, fermenting, baking and pickling to layer depth and complexity. The result is bold, expressive cooking that doesn’t hold back on flavour, with plenty of choice across the menu, including chef-led selections and strong plant-based options. Standout dishes include tea-smoked duck with sweet and sour hoisin and black olive kombu, which brings richness and savoury depth with a modern twist. To finish, the Chinese red date doughnut with coconut miso butterscotch and yuzu is a memorable dessert that hits sweet and tangy notes all at once. Generous, creative and fun, Koji is the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression.
