Black Estate

A destination highly recommended for a relaxed lunch among the vines less than one hour’s drive from Christchurch. The striking, rustic building with its sweeping view over the valley is the perfect setting to experience one of the leading North Canterbury wine estate's excellent and sometimes quirky wines, accompanied by some fine fare. The kitchen sources local seasonal produce and foraged ingredients for a tight, thoughtful menu that is truly reflective of both sea and land. Expect local lamb, truffles in season and more.

NOTE: The restaurant changed chefs during our assessment period, so could not be considered for a hat award in 2026. However, as it has been highly regarded in the past it has retained a place in our guide as a Destination. We look forward to reassessing in 2027.
