There’s no doubt that Terry and Mary Peabody have created a legacy in their winery built on family values and the restaurant, with a menu that champions the producers of the region, has had a huge influence on telling Hawke’s Bay’s food-and-drink story. Sandwiched between the glorious Te Mata peak and a view of the vines, diners get to enjoy chef Casey McDonald’s accomplished creations that often draw inspiration from the kitchen gardens. This is not a challenging menu for diners, but it is superbly executed. The snacks are sensational and benefit from the added bling of house-made pickles, ferments and preserves. The pasta is exceptional: gnocchi dressed in a richly braised rabbit and a butter, herb and tarragon sauce is heavenly and Casey’s potato focaccia bread will forever remain on this reviewer’s death-row list. With relaxed and friendly service, a stunning backdrop and a wine list that is naturally world class, there’s every excuse to want to linger longer – and longer still.
