This unique wee spot in a sleepy seaside location achieves marvels and justifiably enjoys the strong support of the local community. For an authentic helping of Kiwi hospitality, look no further: playlist classics enhance the friendly ambience as chef-owner Helen Turnbull commands the pass – tasting, tasting and tasting again every component as she nurtures each dish to life. Her pride in the restaurant is seen in warm, friendly staff, in the small but delightfully formed beverage menu and, of course, in plates of deliciousness that are like little food-treasure boxes. Jerusalem artichoke soup takes liquid enjoyment to fresh heights with a vivid green and peppery watercress purée on top and a roasted garlic and mustard surprise at the bottom of the dish. Grilled Te Kauwhata eel is served with curried apple butter and kawakawa and a garlic-mandarin crumble. You can tell that clever combinations come naturally to Helen and a tamarillo mousse with a gochujang cookie that has that perfect crispy-chewy ratio and a chilli kick that rises slowly is proof in a pudding.
