This beloved plant-based restaurant has been delighting diners for more than a decade and is a testament to the skill and dedication of chef-owner Asher Boote, who often mingles with guests at the bar or around the dining area, bringing a personal touch. For those who enjoy a front-row seat to the culinary action, the bar is the perfect spot, while the attentive staff ensure a seamless dining experience from any table. Renowned for transforming simple ingredients into extraordinary dishes, Asher’s ethical approach to cooking earned him the Champion for Change title at the 2022 Cuisine Good Food Awards. His much-admired bread, made from his mother’s cherished sourdough starter, is a must-try. The menu is hard to predict, but you can be sure that, no matter what the dish, Asher has treated the ingredients with the utmost respect. Parsnips may be served both poached and puréed then topped with their own fried peelings and presented with some deliciously smoked yams and a red cabbage kimchi. Apples might be paired with a toasted caramel and rice pudding purée and a salted shiso ice cream. We will never forget the Egyptian walking onion and lime soup with its warm yet zesty freshness that was simply sublime. At Hillside each visit brings a delightful surprise.
