IN BRIEF The pride of the Ōtepoti seaside

Textarea
Right on the waterfront, at the western end of the beach, is a haven of flavour – a local secret serving up a collection of inventive, seasonal dishes. Chef Hannes Bareiter was born in Germany but has a Kiwi soul and a penchant for making the best of produce. He uses only local ingredients but also sources ‘surplus’ stock which allows him to bring crayfish, black truffles, pāua and wagyu beef to the menu for a surprisingly reasonable price. We thoroughly recommend his Feed Me option where you trust the chef – you will not be disappointed. We certainly weren’t. Who could be when wafer-thin slices of cured beef are topped with fresh asparagus tips, a lemon-flavoured goat’s cheese and a tiny poached quail’s egg? Invention doesn’t stop at the mains, the desserts are just as stunning. Pale-pink shiso sorbet with cashew nut, lime leaves, sesame and yuzu? Yes please. Hannes’ partner Melanie Hartman runs the service side of the eatery and has curated an excellent wine list to team with the beautifully presented food. No wonder this seaside venue is often fully booked. Check website for opening hours MAINS: $31-$39 or 5-course set menu $95 per person
